Standard Luggage Size For Checked Bags: Domestic vs. International

A checked bag is a type of luggage that cannot fit in the airplane’s overhead compartment. Unlike carry-on bags, you can’t access these checked bags during your flight.

Most airlines in the U.S. require a checked bag to be under 62 linear inches.

For checked bags, linear inches is the usual measurement standard. This measurement provides airlines with a consistent way to assess bag sizes and ensure each bag fits within the cargo hold, regardless of the individual dimensions.

To calculate the linear dimensions of your suitcase, add the bag’s length, width and height.

Below is a list of standard sizes for checked bags on major airlines in the U.S.:

U.S. Domestic Airline Inches
Allegiant Air 80” max linear dimensions
American Airlines 62” max linear dimensions
Alaska Airlines 115” max linear dimensions

Frontier Airlines 62” max linear dimensions
Hawaiian Airlines 62” max linear dimensions
JetBlue Airlines 60” max linear dimensions
United Airlines 62” max linear dimensions
Southwest Airlines 62” max linear dimensions
Spirit Airlines 62” max linear dimensions

Below is a list of standard sizes for checked bags on international airlines:

How To Measure Suitcase Sizes

Measuring your suitcase at home can help you avoid baggage blunders at the airport before your flight.

To measure the height of your luggage:

  1. Place your luggage on a flat surface, like a table or the floor, to get the most accurate measurement
  2. Stand your luggage up
  3. Use a measuring tape to measure from the wheels to the handle
  4. Measure in inches

To measure the length of your luggage:

  1. Place your luggage on a flat surface
  2. Lay your luggage on its side
  3. Use a measuring tape to measure your luggage vertically, from one side to the other
  4. Record the measurement in inches

To measure the width of your luggage, use a measuring tape to measure across the front of the suitcase, from one edge to the other.
