12.06.2022

With baggage fees at an all-time high and lost luggage scenarios looming in various airports around the world, the time has never been better to embrace traveling with a trusty carry-on.

While many travel rules vary depending on what corner of the world you’re heading to or coming from, size and weight restrictions for carry-on luggage have remained a consistent metric for most airlines. However, there are a few significant differences based on whether you’re flying domestic or international.

So, whether you’re heading to a nearby town or flying across the globe, we’re here to share all you need to know in the domestic vs. international carry-on showdown. We’ll provide easy charts to compare the two, plus share Rollink domestic and international carry-ons you’ll love!

What Is A Domestic Carry-On Bag?

A domestic carry-on bag is any piece of luggage that can be stowed in the overhead bin of a domestic flight.

The standard domestic carry-on luggage size is 22″ x 14″ x 9″ (or smaller) for most domestic airlines in the United States.

From quick escapes to weekend getaways, a domestic carry-on bag is your ideal companion to avoid long waits at baggage claim when traveling within your country’s boundaries.

What Is An International Carry-On Bag?

An international carry-on bag is any piece of luggage that is small enough to fit in the overhead bin of an international flight.

The standard international carry-on luggage size is 21” or below for most international airlines outside of the United States.

Whether you’re traveling to Italy’s cosmopolitan cities steeped in glitz and glamour or the wild mountainous landscapes of the United Kingdom, an international carry-on bag can help you get your travel essentials from point A to point B.

What’s The Difference Between Domestic & International Carry-On Luggage?

So an international carry-on bag typically has to be a tad smaller than a domestic carry-on — but to avoid travel hiccups, it’s best to check the size and baggage weight limits for the specific carrier you’re traveling with.

We created some handy comparison charts to ensure that packing for your next flight is a breeze!

1. International Carry-on Size vs. Domestic

So what’s the difference between a domestic and international carry-on regarding size?

Rollink tip: When in doubt, find some measuring tape to double check your bag before your flight!!

2. Domestic vs. International Carry-on: Weight

Most major airlines in the U.S. don’t have weight restrictions for carry-on bags. As long as they fit securely in the overhead bin, you’re good to go.

But here’s the maximum weight limit for a few American carries that list weight requirements:

U.S. Domestic Airlines Weight In lbs
Frontier Airlines 35 lbs
Hawaiian Airlines 25 lbs

Here’s the maximum weight limit for carry-on bags on major international airlines:

International Airlines  Weight In lbs/kg
Air Canada No limit, as long as you can lift it in the overhead bin
Air France 26.4 lbs
Aeromexico 22 lbs for Basic Fare and 33 lbs for Classic, AM Plus and Class Premier passengers
Air New Zealand 15 lbs for Economy and 22 lbs for Premium Economy and Business Premier passengers
All Nippon Airways (ANA) 22 lbs
British Airways 51 lbs
easyJet 33 lbs
Iberia Airlines 10 kg for Economy and Premium and 14kg for Business Class passengers
ITA Airways 8 kg
Japan Airlines 22 lbs
KLM 26 lbs
Korean Air 22 lbs for Economy and 40 lbs for First/Prestige Class passengers
Philippine Airlines 15 lbs
Ryanair 22 lbs
Singapore Airlines 7 kg
Thai Airways 15 lbs
WestJet No limit, as long as you can lift it in the overhead bin

You might be wondering, “Why does weight limit matter in an airplane?”

Well, proper weight distribution plays a key role in an airplane’s overall performance. It affects the plane’s speed, fuel consumption, controllability and structural integrity.

So, think twice before cheating on your baggage weight! You might need to leave a heavy pair of boots at home, but the good news is you can pack an extra chunky sweater instead — check out our blog on how to pack a suitcase to maximize space and we’ll explain how!

Rollink tip: No clear carry-on weight limit on the airline’s website? Just make sure that you can lift your carry-on bag over your head with ease!

3. Domestic vs. International Carry-on: Restrictions

When it comes to packing your carry-on, restrictions are the same across the board, regardless of whether you’re flying domestically or internationally.

From alcoholic beverages to sharp objects, it’s essential to know what you can and can’t pack in your carry-on bag to avoid run-in’s with Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

When packing your carry-on bag, leave these items out:

  • Alcoholic beverages over 140 proof
  • Ammunition
  • Liquids, pastes or gels in containers over 100ml
  • Self-defense tools such as brass knuckles or pepper spray
  • Sharp objects such as razor blades or pocket knives

Rollink tip: Follow the 3-1-1 liquids rule and pack shampoo and other liquids in travel-sized containers. Need to keep your toiletries organized during your trip? Look no further than our water-proof Rollink Hanging Toiletry Bag
